I played a bit around with Finalsun and tried to make a small snow map.
The problem is that the ice doesn't grow as expected. Beside of a small area, the ice doesn't grow anywhere else.
The pic shows the area in which ice grows.

It is surrounded by Ice 01 open water cells, but it doesn't grow farther.

I also copied the small section into an Ice 02 and Ice 03 field, but the same result.

Does anyone has an idea why this happens?

Another question
Is it possible to make Ice melt during the day and grow in night? (while day-night-loop)

I believe the ice doesn't grow further, because units can already cross that tiny cleft. Yeah, it looks silly, but it's true. I'm not sure why the ice doesn't grow in the bottom cell, though.

@Second question: I believe it's possible with map triggers, but you should ask Aro just to confirm.

With the Ice, you have to place down a special tile, which determines where the Ice will grow.
(Please forgive the rubbish picture demonstration)

The special Ice tile that I've labeled is a piece in the Ice01 section that simply looks like water, but it's impassible terrain which simply determines where the ice will grow, you have to place this from the ice to the other sheets of ice (Including placing this tile down before you place down your ice).

Second Question: Unfortunately its not possible to make ice randomly melt using map triggers. The best option you've got is changing the settings of a civilian vehicle of some sort making it both heavy (causing the ice to crack) and invisible (so you can't see these vehicles going across the ice). Use triggers to make this invisible heavy vehicle to follow waypoints going across the ice, cause it all to slowly crack or melt looking like its a natural effect. Just an idea.

I did what you said, and remade all the ice with the open water Ice01 tiles including the ice2water-edge parts and then rebuild the whole shore line on top of the ice01 tiles. but it still only grows on the left side. Another thing is that, there it only grows to cracked ice but not to the second stage solid ice.

Thats stange. By placing the special Ice tile down wherever you want it to grow, In-game it should just cover all of them tiles... If you want you could send me the map and I could take a look at it for you.

Still any help with this problem? I'm building up a snow map with lots of places of empty water with ice shores, but none of the ice grows to the opposite shore. They only grow back when they are destroyed (and neither does all of it).

I think Yuri08 was right in the 2nd post in this thread. The width of the path of ice that grows seems dependant on the width of the shoreline it is connected to..

Unfortunately thats not completely right. I've looked into this further and I've discovered a possibility. By looking at all maps that have working growing ice, the water gaps / distance between the ice shores is quite large and the special ice growth tile is at least 5+ cells in width. I've tried on one of my maps and it seems to work fine.

now that you say it, it makes sense why it doesn't grow.
Maybe ice can't grow if there isn't enough space for solid ice too.
And since solid ice needs at least a width of 3 cells for its own (1 solidcentre + 2 for solid2cracked ice transition), plus another 2 cells for the transition to open water, ice doesn't grow everywhere.

So maybe smaller paths can only be done if you place already all solid ice and cracked ice tiles, so the game knows exactly how it would look full grown. Otherwise it needs enough space to calculate a good path.

Aww damn, no I must either redo my snow map, or make the ice paths already complete sad.gif

1) Your ice shores must stick out from the rest of the shores, like a peninsular.
2) Your ice shores are complicated, make them more simple with little curves.
3) Use the picture I've posted above for reference, try to make it look similar to that.
If you take a look at Westwood maps, maps of which ice grows on has both lots of space and simple shores. I don't understand, this works perfectly fine for me, I can't see why you're having problems.

Something has gone horribly, horribly wrong.

I tried to follow your advice, Aro, and I widened and "peninsulated" the ice shores in the picture I had shown before. Nothing changed. I looked at few WW maps with growing ice, and noticed that the special water ice tiles are all the same in a specific "growing area". So, I replaced all other special tiles with ice02 special tile. Nothing new. I also noticed that the destroyed ice doesn't grow back, but units can cross it :O

Now, the crazy sh*t happened:

I made a closed pool of water for testing, 12x12 in size. I divided it into three strips, and filled each one with different ice tiles (for example, strip one with ice01 special tiles, and appropriately large, ready ice shores). I tested it in the game. Nothing! The ice did not grow! I then completely surrounded the area with ice shore, widened the shores, and tested again. The game f*cking crashed! I get internal errors everytime I try to run the map!

I uploaded a picture from the pool that made the map unplayable!

Put the difference ice's in separate pools, and make the ice stick out from the rest of the shore...

This is even getting on my nerves. I don't understand what you're doing wrong, everything I've said should of worked fine. It works fine for me... This doesn't require triggers or anything, you do have "Growing Ice" checked in basics don't you?
