hey LKO how do you make your textures and animations?
first to your model
add some special design elements like a different door shape, smokestacks etc.
now it looks almost the same as the original factorys.
but for a first attempt to learn using 3dmodels, its ok.
-i prefer it, to create my 3dmodels out of one mesh and not many different overlapping models like you have done it (the different colors for each model say me that those are separate)
-this way i can be sure the renderer doesn't get problems with the depth-information of the different models; only moving parts like legs i seperate into different models
-for me it's also easier to texture a single model than many separate
but if you have no problems with your way of modeling you can keep it too.
Textures
i dont make textures i only use them.

in 3dsmax press "m" and then add to a material a texture on "diffuse color" (as far as i remember)
then chose the polygons you want to texture and click in the material window on "assign material" (or similar, i dont have 3dsmax now to look up)
then with addUVWmap adjust the textures.
Animation
on the bottom of 3dsmax is a frame-bar and a symbol like a key
click on it and the bar turns red
then click on the button above the key while you select a 3dmodel (to set an animation start point on the frame bar)
move the frame-bar-cursor on an new position
move/rotate the model you wish to animate and click again on the button above the key thing button.
or look at a 3dsmax tutorial if you dont know what i mean with key-button

you could also download my ATST max file from my shp tutorial as an example
\EDIT sorry i see now you're using Gmax. hmm i dont know how it works there. maybe you see it, if you import my ATST model.
