does your computer look like this? wanna make it look like this? well your options are: A) pay 200-800 dollars for vista and the computer to put it on or pay 0-20 dollars for a small program that runs on most computers for those that choose B follow my simple instructions. 1. first you should get windowblinds, this is the only thing you'll have to pay for. it costs about 20 dollars and is only needed if you want the Aero style transparent borders. you can get it here: http://www.stardock.com/products/windowblinds/ or if you don't want to pay for even that there is fastaero available here: http://fastaero.wordpress.com/ however this is still in beta and may have some unexpected side effects. 2. in order for the transformer to work correctly you need to press Start<run. it should open up a small window with a text bar. in that bar type cmd. that opens up the DOS style command prompt, in that copy and paste the following: REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\HotFix\KB925902" /v Installed /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /fthat simply removes a faulty update by windows so you can run third party programs to get the Vista start orb and the sidebar. 3. next you need the actually transformation pack, you can get that here: http://www.jcxp.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=18388the installation is kinda harsh but its really not as bad as they make it seem. if you don't have windowblinds it will recomend you get it and if you haven't completed step 2 it will yell at you, after that its pretty simple. now that your computer looks like vista you might want to clean up your icons some. now punksoft which is a free organization similar to Mozilla has come up with a nifty program to give you a dock, (that thing on the side of the picture i posted where the icons should be) you can get that for free here: http://www.punksoftware.com/rocketdocknote: YOU DO NOT NEED THE TRANSFORMATION PACK TO GET THE DOCK YOU CAN GET IT BY ITSELF enjoy and if you have an questions feel free to ask.

Hmm usefull.. I'll have a look at this, thanks. But offtopic question: Does vista let you have more room on your computer? I had TW installed before and it lagged my computer to the ground..

Who needs Vista? DX-10 is being ported to XP so those of us with the "inferior" OS (only comparing to Vista here, with sarcasm of course) can play those pretty DX-10 things without being reeled in by the DRM bloatware that is Vista. At least, that's what the experts know Vista as. One thing I need cleared up here, is Halo 2 exclusive to Vista as in, it's DX-10 but could run on an XP port of the DX if wanted, or is it exclusive as in, it'll only work on that actual OS?

QUOTE (ChielScape @ Jul 18 2007, 05:22 AM) the latter, Sir. It uses DX-9. Oh, good. That's what I thought. QUOTE and DX-10 on XP will probably never gain the performance of DX-10 on Vista. I would think that depends on the hardware. I think the number of crashes that are the result of the OS itself varies from person to person, so it's not really a valid point to say how stable it is for you. Even if it is, it doesn't mean much, and is why I moved from XP Home to Professional for my new computer. It just works better (for me, at least) and is more flexible than Home; again this doesn't mean much. Even without the DRM, and even with my nice new rig, I'm still put off by how much resources are used by Vista. 512 MB of RAM is the bare minimum, and with all the fancy stuff that Vista is known for enabled 512 MB might not be enough. But I could be wrong there.

it'll manage in 512, but barely. However, Vista knows where resources are needed the most and dedicate them there. when RAM usage reaches 80-90% Vista stops most of its unnecessary processes to free up more memory, something XP doesnt do. when idle, it uses as much as it wants, as the memory isnt used anywhere else anyway, hence my idle memory usage is 33% even with 2GB in it. However, i have yet to find a game that gets usage over 85% (except that one time when i forgot to exit photoshop beforehand) 2GB is recommended for gaming, though that's the same for XP systems.

Hmm... I wasn't fully aware of that. But you may want to look at this link, it's quite informing (kinda too late to get you off Vista now, but I feel you should know what's on this page if you don't know already); http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/vista_cost.html

It's still maddening that they baked all of that crap into the core of the OS, especially with the encrypted busses, even though it had been tried before by IBM and found impractical. Why MS decided to do it anyway is beyond me. It's not so much that I don't want that tiny amount of performance drain, it's that it's there to begin with. In the end, Hollywood ends up screwing us all over, not MS.

Yeah. Hollywood. Well, more like the MPAA and RIAA, but they can be lumped with Hollywood. They're responsible for the DRM and "copy protection", and thus responsible for screwing us over with what could have been a much better OS that cost way too much to develop for what it turned out to be. Of course, sooner or later the masses will have no choice but to migrate to Vista, and by then I hope that SP1 has improved the OS enough for it to become a good choice. Right now there's no reason to get Vista, there just aren't enough DX-10 games out yet and Vista drivers for ATI/nVidia cards still seem to be flaky (although that could change, what with today's release of Catalyst 7.7 and last week's release of Forceware 163.11). Many peripherals won't work with Vista that do work with XP, so this is another strike.

Dual 8800s? lol no you can't have that on Vista.
k
I'll start using Vista in a few years on a quad-boot machine with XP as the primary OS.
And some nerds hacked Halo 2 and Shadowrun to work on XP. GG Microsoft. "Vista exclusive" my rear end.

Since when can't you have dual 8800s on Vista? In fact, just today a hotfix was released that corrected a known issue with SLI and Crossfire in Vista. It's here if anyone wants it.Where'd you hear about this 'hack'? Sounds awesome.

Lol, exactly. I'd rather use the money for the 2nd card on a better CPU or something.
