I've got a USB that was accidentally yanked out of the PC (it wasn't moving any files or such), and its case was broken.
I have the USB chip itself (usb drive, but no case) it seems perfectly fine from careful visual inspection except for a slighly bent insertion tip.

When I plug it into my PC, it appears but I can't open it. And windows (XP) says it is an unknown device

The Data inside is of utmost importace and is irreplacable!

Ideas? ohmy.gif

What really matters is whether the plastic inside the connector is damaged. There's 4 metal strips on that which are what actually transfers the data.

Of course, that is, if the actual device is not damaged.

If the data inside is irreplaceable, then I expect that it is backed up now, just in case? tongue.gif

Actually, I was going to burn it all onto a dvd, but yeah...

What do you mean by visuals? Pictures? 'Cause I don't have a camera.

Oh no, I didn't fix it and I'm not sure if I can...

Would you be able to help if I described the problem, and physical condition of the USB?

If Windows sees it, but it's an unknown device, you might try seeing what Device Manager says, and if Disk Management can see it.

Use Start > Run > devmgmt.msc and diskmgmt.msc.

What exactly does that do? Get my files out by using that?

If it shows up in Disk Management but not in Explorer, it means the pc does see it as a valid drive, but it can't make head's or tails of the content. Which would mean that the content is corrupted (and most likely partly unrecoverable). But i think this is unlikely, as you said you were not transferring any data at the moment.

Ofcourse if the connector is slightly damaged, the pc probably won't recognize it as a drive at all. Unless the damaged metal strip was just the one for supplying power to the device.

Too many possibilities!

No, it determines if the drive is even readable. If neither sees it, or Device Management flags it as an unknown device, you're f*cked plain and simple. If Device Management sees it as a USB device and Disk Management can see it as a drive, you may be able to at least use it again but the data is probably so badly corrupted that recovery is not possible.

Well, I thought of getting a professional to fix it and this is the best I've found...

All they do is promote themselves in their blog. They don't actually seem that legit to be quite honest, but I could be wrong.

How do you know? What gives it away?

Do you know any better alternative(s)?

I would really like to help you out but i don't know what is broken/bent without pics, and you don't have a camera, so make like a pic in ms paint, even if it's crappy i'll know what exactly is wrong with it.

Or you could just work off of my ms paint pic:

Oh man!

Is this a bad sign... I plugged my USB drive into my PC to try what infinity said, but my PC doesn't detect it now

To 2kool4u526:

Umm I can't see your pic but,
The drive (the USB's chip) looks utterly intact. Only the metal part which plugs into the PC is slighly bent. The pins and blah look alright.

There's a really good chance your USB drive is just completely shot. There's only so much you can do short of sending it somewhere to fix it.

I know that this is bumping a month old topic,
but the USB's data is EXTREMELY important.

I've sent it to that place and I think they can't fix it due to a damaged chip on the USB...
does anyone know a place where I can get the USB's data recovered.
I'm willing to pay $1000+ US for it, very serious
