So my main modding computer got hardcore raped. It ended up with a virus in the BIOS (thanks to my younger brother), and I now have to purchase a new Motherboard, Processor, and Hard disk. I will have no modding capabilities for a good while. I lost everything.. and i mean EVERYTHING.. including *ALL* XTX and Tiberian Odyssey work.

Sorry guys.. it's not looking pretty for the next few weeks.

I thought it was years since viruses last affected the BIOS.
If it really is a BIOS virus, you can just flash the motherboard so you don't need to replace that. How on God's earth could it affect the processor? I'd assume that an Alienware would have a temperature sensor to cut out if it overclocks, and that's pretty much all the virus could do to it.

You can overclock alienwares. There is a setting in BOIS for when your PC will reboot once certain things get too hot, so if your CPU gets too hot from overclocking, the setting can be changed there. If the virus really is a BIOS virus, then it might have affected that also, to prevent the stopping of it's destruction, and providing a explanaition for any failed safety things....

Anyway, bad luck dude, whatever it is thats causing the problem.

If your bios is f***** up try to flash it. Do you have anything to lose ?
You can get flashing stuff you can do, but I am not very smart about it...

alienware uses consume motherboards, so go and find the motherboard model, go and find out the DOS flashing procedure and download the newest BIOS. make sure you have a floppy drive you can boot from and your all set

Why would you want an alienware anyway? They charge you more for the neon green case than they do the actual components.

My motherboard allows you to boot from a ios-flashing boot floppy even when the bios is corrupt, and it's only an alright motherboard. There was a tutorial in a CustomPC magazine sometime ago about how to recover a lost bios without boot floppy: find someone who has the same mobo/bios as you, speak to hik nicely, replace the bios with yours while the computer is on, flash it, swap them round again, and hey presto! Your bios is recovered.

ow if only we all had uncles who gave us free uber-computers.

that is an ASUS feature, my A8R-MvP can do that as well (even though it blows giant chunks)

but your BIOS shouldnt be corrupt unless you attempted a flash, if it boots to windows its fine

I'm not sure how you would even know it was a BIOS virus...

And i certainly don't see how it could seriously affect hardware components.

it caused a CPU overheat... so it was fried. Thank the lords of kobal I had insurance on that sucker.. they gave me a replacement CPU (same model).. but the video card i had to buy myself. some technitions wiped the entire HDD clean, clearing all bits... so I'm back up and running at 80% capacity (some things i had cant be recovered, like the "daTSchikinhed Map Editor v0.02".. which was freakin awesome.. had some nifty features.. you can thank TShyper for that one.

a BIOS virus doesnt cause a CPU overheat dude
the reason a CPU overheats is lack of cooling coupled with doing alot of work
so it would seem to indicate that you have a cooling problem in your case, or your heatsink fan was not working at the time
or it was a random occurence

so it was just a plain old virus
just to clear that up
