No, that was about mission
packs. Maps and missions don't HAVE to be in a mixfile to work, but for packs it's just a lot easier than having hundreds of files in the game folder.
Anyway, just make sure they have the correct name format and it should work. For multiplayer maps, this format is "SCM##EA.INI" (and .BIN). Multiplayer maps can't use the full mission name format where the "EA" part is changed to EB/EC/etc.
